Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Acne is also called acne vulgaris and common acne. It’s a disease of the hair follicles which appears on face, chest and back that usually affects almost all teenagers. It is not caused by bacteria although bacteria play a role in its development. In simple words acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Effective treatments are available but acne can be stubborn. The pimples and bumps heal slowly but when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up. According to studies almost 70-80 percent population of the United States is suffering from this condition and increasingly, younger children are getting acne as well. There are many reasons behind acne formation but some of them I am mentioning below.
Causes of Acne
Acne typically occurs on face, neck, cheek, back and shoulder. These areas of the skin have the most oil glands. Acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Hair follicles connected to oil glands secrete an oily substance (sebum) to lubricate your hair and skin. Sebum normally travels along hair shaft through the openings of the hair follicles onto the surface of your skin. When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells then the two can build up in the hair follicles. Pimples are raised red spots with a white center which develops when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Some other factors that can cause acne are oil production, dirt, dead skin cells, clogged pores, bacteria and pollution. Some other factors that can worsen your condition are poor diet, hormonal changes, dirty skin, cosmetics, certain medications and stress.
